It's been many, many years since I've been in an ice rink, and tonight I had a VIVID demonstration of how powerful scent memory can be.
We moved to Hamilton a few months ago, and haven't really done any exploring yet.
My husband heard of "Buffalo Chicken Poutine" recently, so today we decided to go try some.
I found a restaurant nearby that had it - Don Cherry's. It's just up the highway a bit, so we went.
As it turned out, it wasn't a freestanding restaurant. It turned out that we were going for poutine in a hockey rink, which had a Tim Horton's in the parking lot.
I don't think Porter really realized how much my country really does live up to stereotypes, LOL.
Anyway, the meal was decent, but ... God I missed the smell of ice rink.
As soon as I walked in, one whiff of it and I had goosebumps. My entire body felt electrified.
I didn't even want to go into the restaurant, I was absolutely entranced by the rink smell. It felt like it was enveloping me, and I just wanted to stand there in the lobby and bask in it.
He finally convinced me to actually enter the restaurant, but I couldn't get my mind off rink smell. It's like a drug!
It straight up had me hallucinating - scent memory triggered other senses, and I swear I could feel the wind in my hair and my muscles reacting as if I was doing a flying camel... just standing there in the lobby!
Came home after, and ... I really need to find a way to get back to skating.
I need more rink air.
I need to get back to skating.
