First Tossies Since Coming Back!

SO we went to the Adult Championships this past weekend, to cheer on our new skating friends, and get a feel for the whole thing.

I am SO energized by the whole thing! I’ve missed competing SO much. Next year, I’ll be skating at this competition!

A man holding a coffee, looking over an ice rink.

Hubby’s first competition… he had to check out his future competition as well!

Anyway, I wanted to get into the spirit of it, so I made a bunch of tossies.

Man, tossies have really changed since I was a kid, and I LOVE IT.

Back in the day, there’d be some sort of vendor selling fake flowers with ribbon for a couple bucks each. You’d buy them for your friends, and toss them on the ice when they were done skating.

It was just “flowers”, but really… they’re what are now knows as “Tossies”.

These days, adults go wild with them, putting together little gift bags, custom printing magnets, all kinds of stuff. I have a friend in the USA who’s gotten mini bottles of booze in tossies!

The nice thing about adult competitions is that people make TONS of tossies, trying to give them to as many people as possible – rather than just the closest friends.

Love it!

Anyway, I didn’t go quite as wild, my first time at it.

I decided on 3 flavours of cotton candy, tied up in frosting bags. Light, relatively aerodynamic, and low risk of splattering on the ice!

A pile of white cards tied with blue ribbons.

A pile of large clear frosting bags stuffed with blue cotton candy.

I had a little note about my husband and me returning to skating, and a blank card to write personal notes on for everyone.

Blue, green, and purple bags of cotton candy, each tied with matching ribbon and a card.

We tossed 100 of them, and ran out. Yikes. Will be better prepared next time!

Hurt my shoulder throwing them (THAT one needs a better war story!), But met some cool people as a result.

Tossies really are a fun way for the SUPER socially awkward (like me!) to meet people!

Also? I ended up RECEIVING my first tossie since returning to skating!

This lovely woman came up to me, thanked me for the tossie, and handed me one of hers. When I told her I wasn’t back to competing yet, she said to consider myself pre-tossied for my return to competitions next season.

A plastic baggie with a card in ot.

My first tossie!

Someone’s cutting onions in here…

Hey, I'm Marie!

I skated as a kid, and have been making the long, rough road back as an adult.

This time, I have a husband to drag along with me :)

I started back in early 2019, and ran into dual roadblocks in 2020 - the pandemic, and being severely crippled by FOUR PILLS of Ciprofloxacin - an antibiotic that destroyed most of the tendons in both of my feet.

Oh, and pancreatic cancer. Fun stuff.

I've learned to walk again, and in October 2021, I started back. Again.

Here's where I'll chronicle the whole mess!
